Star Trek Games History - Early Years

Once upon a time, there were no computers for the average person to play any sort of games on. The world into which Star Trek was born did not even have anything like the colorful rectangular ‘data solids’ (if there’s another term, I can’t recall right now) that were used to store information. At least, if there was anything like them, they were experimental. Punch cards were still fairly common. Magnetic tape was just starting to replace them.

So I think it’s little surprise that when computers started to become more common, at least around colleges, Star Trek-themed games were among the first to be developed. They may not have had the graphics of later games, but they were still enthusiastic. Two such versions of these games can still be downloaded and played: Super Star Trek and EGA Trek. Download them, have fun with the games that helped start it all.

Of course, these games are old enough that you’ll probably need DOSBox to play.
